utensils

March 2, 2010

I drew yesterday. I was lacking inspiration so I decided to attempt to draw my favorite cooking utensils. Simple lines are all I am able but I find drawing to be so relaxing and mind clearing. I really think the house could fall down when I am putting lines on to paper. I haven't decided if this is a good or a bad thing yet or even what to call it.

Chael threw his crayons on the floor, (see previous post).

Back to the utensils, of course I have my two spatulas. These I use multiple times a day. A recent addition (Christmas) is this hand held grater. It  works so well for cheese, garlic, onions...and is easy to clean up. My wooden spoon is a must. The last is the 7" santoku knife. This knife sat in my knife block for probably three years before I decided to use it. Now I can't even imagine chopping and mincing veggies without it. I am so glad I had the nerve to be adventurous. (Trying a new knife is adventurous for me, I know boring.) I also have a meat cleaver I have never used...

I am thinking I should put my spatula to work and make these sometime. Not so healthy but oh they look delicious.

monday morning

March 2, 2010

I love Monday mornings. Michael stays home half day so it leaves us a morning to wake up slowly and have breakfast together. We enjoyed Chael's conversation this particular morning. He just went on and on with his expressive hand gestures and an occasional recognizable word. I believe the topic of conversation was the Greek alphabet or something like that... We have Greek class Monday night so Michael and I finish our homework and Chael likes to join us with a box of crayons. He is still not too interested in using the crayons but pulling them out of the box and dropping them on the floor is fun.

On this Monday morning we had these waffles which a have become a favorite staple around here. It is so easy to do and for me having most of the work done the night before leads to a happier morning. I meant to take a picture but we ate them too quickly.

Now it is Tuesday back to the everydayness stuff. I have laundry to do and a bathroom to clean. I can't tell you how thankful I am to have one bathroom and not three! I will probably change my mind on that someday but for right now I am so content in having one.

Also to add to the ramblings of this post I found this gals website to be so interesting, and somewhat inspiring. I am thinking dreads are the way to go though Michael disagrees strongly.

tea and cookies

February 24, 2010

My sister came over today and visited with Chael and me. We discovered that these cookies are really wonderful with tea. I made them originally for Chael to snack on but have found myself devouring them. I will say that my first batch I burnt till they were black, dark black. So my suggestion would be to not bake them for fifteen minutes (or be completely sidetracked and discover your cookies by the plumes of smoke escaping the oven door). I found with my second batch that 8-10 min was perfect and I didn't leave mine in the oven for 30 min as the recipe recommends. They turned out just right, a crisp browned vanilla wafer.

stiches

February 23, 2010

I am trying to develop my embroidery skills. What I have learned is that my skills are very limited and knotted thread is a test of patience. I was happy to find this book for .25 this weekend in a thrift store. It is filled with cute little stitches and perfection in its demonstrations of what they are supposed to look like. Mine are far from even, straight, and many times I think would be considered knots over stitches. I have a tendency to leave difficult projects on the table until dust and other things have begun to pile upon them. They remain there until I get a need to declutter my work area and I discover the forgotten project. So often I find myself doing this with things other than craft projects. I loose patience and try to ignore the difficulties at hand. In doing so I think I miss out on the rewards perseverance and patience produces. I want to be able to suffer well when it comes. And my hope is that I will have learned through the little trials, no matter how small.

My prayer for today is that I will be able to, "Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer."
Romans 12:12

dirty window

February 21, 2010

These are purely random shots taken behind a very dirty cracked windshield. I think it has probably been six months or more since the car was washed and about two years for the cracks. We are not car wash people...obviously. Though I would like to be a windshield person. Someday.

change

February 18, 2010

The sun was shining so Chael and I couldn't resist the porch swing today. It felt so good to have that sun shining in my eyes. I love they way skin tingles under its warmth. I of course got sidetracked from the swing to the interesting items leftover from the fall and Chael to the dwindling wood pile. Also I was excited to signs that winter may not last forever with the new growth on the honeysuckle and buds on the lilacs.

So thankful for change in seasons, in weather and in life.
